I live in the cloud.  This is a literal statement, I spend the majority of my waking life working and playing in the cloud.  I get my news from the cloud, using it as a window from which to be a good witness to history.  I keep up with friends and family using the cloud, just a poke here and there and a snippet of what is going on.  As if we were passing on the sidewalk or having a chat on the front porch.  I have found that if I harness the energy of the cloud I can handle a lot more clients and get much more work done.  The cloud “magnifies” my work, making me orders of magnitude more efficient.  The cloud gives me a voice, allows me to be involved in the political discourse.  Some might say a disproportionate voice, since I know how to use the cloud to amplify my opinion.  Finally, the cloud helps keep me safe.  Warning me of impending snow storms that might make a drive dangerous or any of the hundreds of other possible dangers we all face on a daily basis.
.
Many friends, associates and aquaintences have noticed parts of how I live and asked me questions.  Sometimes endless questions about all kinds of issues.  The more questions I got the more I thought there was enough interest to go ahead and put in the time to properly do a blog.
.
I enjoy talking about the cloud and my use of it.  I am proud of how clever I am and really like hearing from people, how they have tried something I suggested and it worked out great.  I like being the cloud evangelist, introducing people to the cloud for the first time or deepening the understanding of the cloud for people already aquainted.
.
Another reason for doing this blog is what I discovered as I prepared for this under taking.  I found that having to quantify my use of the cloud for my blog has forced me to evaluate my systems in a much more detailed manner,  As I evaluate closer and closer so I can write about these concepts new ideas are constantly popping out.  New possibles for exploiting the technology to become even faster and more organized.
.
It is interesting, the more I work on this blog to help others the more I help myself.  Sounds like a pretty sound business model to me.  While I do not expect to set the world on fire and be the Google of blogging I am finding that the work I put in on this project is in fact paying me some substantial dividends already.  I am seeing some major gains in my productivity.  I am hoping that this will continue.

Nothing exciting is going to be happening this week.  Maybe a good thing though.  Isn’t it an Asian curse “May you live in interesting times”.

.

So I guess I can take a boring week once in a while.

.

Monday… On my only software customers site.  They are a huge customer for me, paying most of my bills.  Currently they are switching me back over to a project I was debugging here about 6 months ago.  I like this change so currently I am a happy camper here.

.

Somewhat productive day on the road. Can learn a lot asking questions if you remember to be quiet and listen carefully.  Problem with most people is the point becomes asking the question rather than getting answers.  I like to wait after I get an answer for at least 10 seconds… gives the person time to add something or continue talking on the subject.  Great way to get new information.  I think knowing when to “shut up” is a skill, one which I constantly work on.

.

I am in my own office for the evening.  An exciting mix of software upgrades and website updates.  Good to be busy!

.

Tuesday…  Early morning today.  Going to let the day unfold naturally.  Between weather and some uncertainty on when a couple of customers are going to contact me with information I need it is best I just go with the flow.

.

Wednesday… Another Northeast US storm threatening…  sigh.  Working at home today.

.

Got a facebook fan page up.  It needs work but it is a start…

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wired-2-The-Cloud/120538374686818

Replaced the bottom monitors on my rack with black flat panels from Dell.  Got them in this week and I think they look great.  I will post the pics soon.  POSTED AS PROMISED!

New Flat Panel Screens

New Flat Panels

Twitter lists testing.  Need something to organize the flood of information.  http://twitter.com/#!/Wired2TheCloud

Some things I have accomplished this weekend so far…

1) Changing website copyright dates for 2011.   Not much fun but it is necessary.
.
2) Reviewing the project tasks in Teamworkpm.  Adding some, deleting some and changing some.
.
3) Taking my meeting notes (from a client meeting) and implementing the tasks we discussed.  Trying to go the extra mile for this client as well so spending some quality time fixing issues.
.
4) Alexa is starting to annoy me.  I add Alexa banners on most of my clients but some show “no data” forever.  Removing them.

When I went to look for office space I had two requirements.  I needed a small and very inexpensive space to call my own, but I also needed it to be creative.  Can’t have a technology company in a blah space, it sends the wrong message I think.

So when I saw this building I knew I wanted this office.

There is a creative energy here that I have always liked.

Been rough… bad weather, off hour meetings and personal issues.

Things are returning to normal slowly. Expecting another foot of snow on Friday so will be at the house working!

Trying to setup my Blackberry torch 9800 as a tethered modem… just a little complicated. LOL.

I am a 48 year old male, married for 26 years with two grown daughters.  One of my daughters still lives at home and the other is out on her own.

I still have all my hair albeit a bit thinner.  I am a little over weight, 230 pounds, 6 foot tall.  Brown hair, brown eyes.

I am a rare breed, an engineer with a side of business man.  I own my own consulting practice.  My practice is divided into two disciplines.

First is where I started.  I develop, maintain and debug software.  My primary programming language is C++ with a little C#.

I have been a Software Engineer for over 25 years.  I started out with DOS, saw OS2 come and go and now work almost exclusively in the Microsoft Windows environment.

Second is web sites and this is where I want to be in the future. I have little or no artistic ability but have taken the same software quality practices that work when developing software and applied them to web sites.  For instance I am careful to do all appropriate testing such as testing my sites with multiple versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.

I have a lot of customers and for the most part I am a one man show.  I can handle all of this because I am completely anal retentive about organization.

I am a very pragmatic being.  I use what works  till I find something that works better.

I am a denizen of the cloud because it works the best.

Going to my main client.  They are a large company just south of Boston.  I debug code.  Not maintain code, I debug the problems that the customers and SQA find.  I like this kind of work.  If you have ever seen House on Fox… I love the puzzles and figuring them out.  Wish I had a team like the House character does though.  lol.

The commute is about 62 miles.  Half back roads and half highway.  I go in the back way to avoid Mass Turnpike traffic.  The whole thing takes me about an hour.

Should have time to do a few things for my blog.  Lots of waiting time.

Got some things done today…

1) Added a bunch of WordPress plugins.   Some you can see and others are for me.

2) Changed the header image.  The old one was hideous.

3) Added some of the main links to my blogrolls.

4) Decided, finally to go with Facebook and Twitter to round out my presence.  This will give me three vectors or more precisely will give you three views into what I am doing here.

Amazing what I can get done when yesterdays storm has kept everything at a standstill.

I live in the Worcester Massachusetts area.   Pronounced “Wooster” not “War Chester”.   If your from this area you understand.

I live here because it gives me access to many high tech markets, Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire and most of Connecticut.  I can even reach most of Rhode Island.  This area also gave me a very quiet place to raise my kids.

I have a small office (less than a mile from my home)  that gives me a “Main Street” mailing address and a place to meet customers.  I outfitted the office with a conference table, a couple of really nice desks and all the office supplies.  The space is very inexpensive and I even sub let part of it out to a customer that needed a desk in the area to work from and a mail drop.

Sometimes I work at the office because it is quiet and can motivate me when I am starting to become lazy.   I will add some office pictures to this post later for anyone that is interested.

As promised…

The problem with living here is that everywhere I work, all of my customers are at least an hour away.   Another problem is the weather.  Today we had almost two feet of snow.  Sigh.  Gives one time to reflect.
